Key technologies of car bumper systems

Key technologies form the engineering foundation for achieving the core functions of automotive bumper systems, including safety, aesthetics, and lightweight design.

Energy-Absorbing Structure Design: Energy-absorbing boxes, through pre-designed crumple zones or variable cross-sections, deform in a specific manner during a collision to optimally absorb energy. The anti-collision beams are stronger than energy-absorbing boxes, distributing impact force more evenly across the longitudinal beams on the left and right sides of the vehicle during a collision, thus improving passive safety. Modern bumper systems constitute a four-level protection system: outer panel (PP polypropylene plastic, used for pedestrian protection and elastic cushioning), buffer layer (honeycomb foam/energy-absorbing structure, for low-speed collisions), anti-collision beams (steel/aluminum alloy, for medium- and high-speed impacts), and energy-absorbing boxes (collapseable metal components that dissipate force through folding and deformation).

 

Materials Technology: Toughened polypropylene and blended modified materials (such as PP, PC/ABS, TPO, etc.) are widely used to balance toughness, rigidity, lightweight, and cost. Blended modified materials are less prone to fracture under 8 km/h collisions and possess elastic recovery, with a cost 10%-20% lower than polyurethane. For high-end or specialized areas, carbon fiber composite materials and SMC (sheet molding compound) are being used to achieve localized reinforcement, weight reduction, and enhanced aesthetic design.

 

Integrated Technology: To adapt to autonomous driving, millimeter-wave radar, cameras, and other sensors are integrated into the bumper. This places new demands on the bumper's shape (requiring pre-installed mounting locations), materials (ensuring radar wave penetration), and structural strength.

 

Quick-Release and Repair Technology: According to the new regulations implemented in 2025, "Front and Rear End Protection Devices for Automobiles" (GB/T 17354-2024), the 20-minute quick-release technology for energy-absorbing boxes is emphasized, aiming to significantly reduce post-accident repair costs and vehicle insurance premiums.
